AUTHOR: William Ernest Henley
TYPE OF WORK/GENRE: Poetry
Context of the work: Henley was born in Gloucester and was the eldest of a family of six children, five sons and a daughter. His father, William, was a bookseller and stationer who died in 1868 and was survived by his young children and creditors. His mother, Mary Morgan, was descended from the poet and critic. From the age of 12 Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee during either, However, his work over the next eight years was interrupted by long periods in hospital because his right foot was also diseased. Henley contested the diagnosis that a second amputation was the only way to save his life by becoming a patient of the pioneering surgeon Joseph Lister and after 3 years henly was discharge from hospital.
Summary: this poem is all about the entire life of henly as I read his history, his father was died when he is very young boy an also his mother but that’s the end of his suffering at early 12 years old he suffered from tuberculosis of the bone that lead to amputation of his left leg and after a year his right leg also is being amputation, as I read this poem is all about his life, but he never ever ask god why this things happen to him. And he never afraid to his life even this all things happen to him and he survive to his life and he died at 53 years old.
our analysis of the story/drama/poem/essay: For me this poem is a good one about the people who ask god why this problem happen to them, and the best part of this poem for me is 4th stanza,” It matters not how strait the gate,How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” This is mean that how problem gods do to you, you need to be ready always and do it not to complain to god, we are the master of this body but we are not the owner of this body.Give your personal opinion about the piece: my own opinion to this poem is that what ever problem you have in your life right now there a solution always because theres no problem without solution, and what ever we suffered we always need to think that god is always here to our side and be strong to our life and never afraid J
